Abstract Background and objectives Coercion in psychiatry is legally tolerated as a last resort. The reduction of the use coercion shared goal hospital administrators, medical nursing staff representatives patients families but requires identification risk factors for coercion. These geriatric psychiatric inpatient settings are not well known, especially regarding seclusion. Through examining prevalence patients’ characteristics, this study aims to identify elderly people. Methods division Geneva University Hospital 2017 was retrospectively analyzed. incidence rate ratios were estimated with multivariable Poisson regressions assess Results Eighty-one 494 (16.4%) experienced at least one coercive measure during their stay (mainly seclusion). younger age, male gender, being divorced or married, cognitive disorders, high item 1 Health Nation Outcome Scales (HoNOS) score (overactive, aggressive, disruptive agitated behavior) admission, previous hospitalizations involuntary referrals from emergency department. Other disorders global HoNOS scores associated Conclusion Higher risks outlined men behaviors, hospitalizations. They differed those observed adults terms civil status, referrals. Therefore, populations should be specifically investigated development interventions aiming reduction.
